Highbush blueberry is a perennial deciduous shrub that is native only to North America. The berry of these native shrubs is 6.4 – 12.7 mm in diameter with a flared crown at the end. Highbush blueberry has been cultivated by Native Americans for thousands of years.
Because the Highbush blueberry is a perennial plant, the root systems remain in the soil for years which prevents soil erosion. The deep root system also allows the plant to draw moisture from the soil, reducing the usage of water for irrigation. Replanting is not required, which means less natural gas and energy is being expended.
